Beanie came on schedule, and the sound of her name was the most rewarding event she could imagine. The fact that this meeting marked the culmination of a business transaction was of trifling importance; the major fact was that the entire dormitory could hear the name of Debbie called to come to the foyer to meet a visitor. Every cell of her frame cried out that the world should know that Debbie Ames was wanted in the office by a boy. Never mind the purpose of the meeting, so long as she and others could hear the recitation of her name.

He was dressed in a suit and white shirt and blue tie and rose when he saw her. She recalled the occasion of the Delta Rho Formal in the spring when Harold had risen, and also Bob, when she and Carol came forward. She looked questioningly at the umbrella in his hand, “It’s been raining some,” he grinned. “I don’t want you to get wet “

“How thoughtful. I haven’t looked out, I’ve been studying.” Not true.

“Ready? I have a cab waiting,” he said.

“Yes.”

He offered his arm under the umbrella, and she thrilled at the picture they must make. He was almost her height, which increased the sensation of rightness about this moment.

She sat beside him with the satisfaction a cat might have beside a warm fire in midwinter. As they shifted positions in their chairs their shoulders occasionally grazed one another’s sleeves, yet their full attention was directed toward the screen. They had made a bargain to see a good movie, and they were keeping it in good spirits. He offered to buy her a soda when it was over, but she had to reply, “I’ve got to be in the dorm by eleven, you know, Beanie, so we won’t have time. Thanks, anyway; that was kind of you to ask.” So they returned to the dorm in the same manner as that by which they left it. They passed kissing couples under the trees and in the corners of the building, walking straight ahead as if they had no side vision.

“Thanks for the pleasant evening, Debbie,” he said as he opened the door.

“I enjoyed it, Beanie,” and the door closed behind her. So concluded, at age nineteen, Deborah Dorcas Ames’ first date.
